Historic Homesite & Mercantile Store

The c.1775 historic Hugh Torance House and Store is North Carolina's oldest surviving store and one of Mecklenburg County’s few surviving 18th-century structures. Located in 2 miles west of downtown Huntersville, North Carolina, the homesite is open for tours and offers free community programs to all ages.

At the Hugh Torance House and Store, we operate and share through HEARTS, recognizing history is more than one story, and connecting the threads of history, people, and pieces into an incredible tapestry for the Catawba

Step back in time to 1779 and into the home of the traveling merchant, Revolutionary War soldier, and “King of Cotton” farmer, Hugh Torance, his wife Isabella Kerr Falls, and their son James G. Torrance. Talented docents lead guests on a guided living history storytelling adventure through the historic home. The history of this site is tied to important American historical events, people, and prominent local families. A visit to the Hugh Torance House and Store offers an enriching experience for all ages, making it a remarkable destination for both education and enjoyment.
